When we were little, we were always asked what we wanted to become as a grown up. Many of us dreamt with becoming a police officer, a spaceman, a fire-fighter, a teacher and many other professions. As we get older we aspire to a different profession and once we are in high school it influences us to decide what we want to do with our future and what career we want to choose. During my high school years I had a child care class where I had the chance to work with children ages 2 ½ to 5 years old. In that class I learned how to work with children and what was expected to do as a teacher. Working daily with the children inspired me to become a preschool teacher. I would teach them basic concepts in reading, math and would help them to be more social. During this age children tend to more shy and preschool helps them to socialize with children of their same age and learn to work with their peers. I would also have the opportunity to work with the parents to help children succeed during preschool and work with them as a team to improve the children’s development. I’m currently attending Fullerton College where I’m majoring in child development and I’m amazed to see how children develop mentally and physically. I love everything that has to do with children from newborns to toddlers. I plan to transfer to Cal Poly Pomona or Cal State Fullerton, where I aspire to earn an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree in teaching. As I was doing my research in the preschool teacher I found out the different requirements that are needed in this career. Depending in the state or in the preschool an associate’s degree will be enough to be able to work in the field, other preschools, such as a private school, require you to a bachelor’s degree in order to be an early childhood educator. In addition to the associate’s degree and bachelor’s degree, two different teaching credentials are requested to complete the training as a preschool teacher. The first credential is a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA), although it is not essential some programs make it a requirement. To get the credential you need to have 120 hours of professional education, 480 hours of professional experience and a professional portfolio, it is earned through the Council for Professional Recognition. .
