“What do you plan on majoring in when you go off to college?” asked the guidance counselor, “Well, to start off my career, I plan to look into being one of the very few male Special Education teachers” I answered her while she just looked at me in such shock, as if it was great that a male as myself would be looking into pursuing this career or more like this goal. Of course as any guidance counselor would she asked me questions like; Do you have any experience with these students? Do you have the patience for the kids with the special requirements that they may need? Coming from a family of special education teachers and with my mother being a principal of special education students and my step dad being an special education teacher aide, I know how rough around the edges it may get. All the times my stepdad told me how many females take on this job but very few males would. The bright side of Special education for college purposes is that it covers most of your in-state tuition if you choose to attend a college in South Carolina. I learned that there are many open position jobs for both male and females around the United States for special education because these children with disabilities are so unique and require a lot of individual assistance to help them. There are more females than males that teach special education but I found out that they also get parents involved to help these kids. They hold meetings such as Individual Education Plan(IEP) meetings(PBS Parents). These meetings help the parents of the student develop goals, educational plans that the education system provide to special needs children learn better and comfortably, and they also discuss the student's academic performance in other classes. They help the child if they might be struggling in a class or having trouble understanding what might be going on. That's why these meetings help accommodate the student to know what they might need to be provided to the child when they are in class and need something such as printed notes, hands on learning, or visual learning, or someone to talk to them to help them understand and keep on task. All of this information was very helpful and I’m glad I found this site to help me with my search. It gave me really good notes to put under my
