Personal Statement: A Career In Special Education

After thirteen years of learning, and a couple more to go, I want to use the things I’ve learned to teach students less fortunate than I. I am planning to pursue the occupation of a special education teacher. Generally, what a special education teacher does is teach students with a variety of disabilities. They construct individualized work plans to fit the needs of each individual student, and work one on one or in small groups with the students in order to teach life skills. Currently, there are about 433,000 special education teachers around the world. Special ed teachers teach students with a variety of disabilities, and work with other adults such as therapists, school psychologists, social workers, and parents to create an Individual Education Program, or an IEP, for students. They follow the pace of the students with no set curriculum, and often require different teaching methods and specialized equipment. The opportunities they have may take the form of higher wages, better facilities, or more prestige. Also, it is possible to be promoted to a supervisor or an administrator, but it may require continued education. Teachers can advance to become mentors to less experienced teachers in order to improve their teaching skills. Finally, they can continue education and earn advanced degrees and teach at the college or university level. To start looking for available jobs, it is highly recommended that one starts their search for employment in public schools, because public schools are where the majority of special education teachers are accepted. They can also look at their college’s career placement center to locate job leads. Last but not least, applying directly to local school systems can give them a chance at earning a job. Even if there is no opening, they will keep their resume in case of a
