Personal Statement: A Career In The Classroom

From my senior year in high school up until the day that I enrolled in the teaching program at BVU, a number of people told me that I should become a teacher. My mom, uncle, and other close family friends are teachers and they were all in my ear about doing it. For some reason I was stubborn and did not think that is what I wanted to do. This all changed while I began substitute teaching and coaching last year. While coaching my Jr. High basketball team, a player and I were talking before practice and he asked me why I was not a full time teacher. At that time I really did not have an answer for him and that got me thinking. Why wasn’t I? I love working with and helping students. I love coaching and interacting with students, as well as trying to help them be the best person that they can be. This class told me that they enjoyed me being there because it seemed like I cared about them and wanted them to succeed, and they told me that I should be their teacher all of the time. Even though I was already enrolled in this program before this had happened, I knew that I was on the right path and that really made me put my mind to my work and helped me accomplish my goals in the classroom early in the process. I have always told people that whatever I end up doing, I want to make a difference in the world. What is a better way to make a difference then to do my best to make an impact on young adult’s lives heading out to the real world? I have been told by teachers and students alike that I should do this as a profession and that has helped me believe in myself. Not only do I think I can do it and be successful, but others think that as well and that just reassures
