The two most valuable aspects would be supports from the Division of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) advisors and an enough length of time that allow students to explore.

Being enrolled in DUS allows students who are undecided about majors to see what they will pursue. DUS gives us enough time to explore around and figure out our interests so that we will not regret studying our chosen subjects. There are around 160 majors in Penn State. We have to be very serious when selecting majors because it affects our future career. I was majoring in economics in the Liberal Arts College. I studied economics in high school, and I loved it a lot because it was all about graphs and charts, like the demand and supply curve. When I came to Penn State, I talked …show more content…

I was not interested in Russian culture and history at all because I have never thought of visiting there. I am only enthusiastic about the places I would like to visit in the future such as England, Sweden, and China. However, Professor Irene Hurd changed my views towards Russia, and she inspired me in a lot of aspects. She talked about the education system in Russia. The curriculum was chaotic after the fall of communism. Schools and colleges did not know what textbooks they had to use; they didn’t have the money to rewrite the textbooks; and students had to pay for everything, such as supplies, books, tuition, etc. The Russian government used to provide free education to people who could get into colleges. Yet, more than one million teenagers could not afford the expensive tuitions, and they had to drop out of schools. Other than that, the Russian government limited the number of students because there was a great need for military and labor forces. Compared to the Russian education system, our system is very organized because we have clear rubrics and sets of criteria to teach the students. I would say I am a very lucky person who is born here and has a chance to study in U.S. college with our government support. It gives me motivation to study harder for my future because I am fortunate that I have support from my family and country while some people in other parts of the world do not.
