My interest in science started at an early age. I have always loved the mystery behind discovering how things work. My parents and grandparents, especially my grandfather, have always encouraged my questioning and nurtured my desire for knowledge. I have never really been content with the simple answer. My desire to dig deeper in order to gain a better understanding covers all areas but is definitely strongest in the area of science. For example, in biology, I find it very interesting to study different organisms, but I am even more intrigued when it comes to learning about how the organelles operate within the organism. Discovering how they all need to function in unison is fascinating and there is always more to uncover. Research seems …show more content…
My previous science experiences actually began before I even realized they were happening. As the younger sibling of a “science nerd” (her words), I was brought along to listen to various lectures. I was around for the final presentations at the end of a week of science camp and I would listen to her talk about the demonstrations and experiments during the long drive home. The whole time, I was soaking in all the information. I was so excited to be old enough to attend the some of the PROMISE Life Science Discovery Programs and thrilled to be able to spend a week during the summer at science camp at USD. I looked forward to each summer and a new theme. The Lawrence Brothers Science Camps provided me with hands-on learning that was so different from the traditional classroom. It was an opportunity to see the books come to life and to see science …show more content…
I believe my interests and goal keep evolving. There is so much to learn and so much to experience. I want to do my best to take advantage of the opportunities that are available to me. Discuss why you want to participate in the Sanford PROMISE Scholars program, any specific areas of interest, and how you will benefit from this experience. I believe the Sanford PROMISE Scholar Program provides a very unique opportunity to expand the walls of the traditional classroom. While I respect and appreciate everything my teachers are able to offer within the classroom, I see the researchers in the lab able to provide a completely different level of education. It is exciting to think about being a part of a team working together to discover new things that can impact society on many different levels. As far as specific area of interest goes, I am really open to any opportunity. With the current attention in the media on concussions, Dr. Thayne Munce’s Lab sounds very intriguing. I think learning more about the long-term consequences of traumatic brain injury during adolescence would lead to very interesting discussions about the future of football at the youth level and
