I personally would have never predicted that I would be interested in the field of agriculture. With no family members being greatly involved in the field of work I will be the first to have gained this great interest in agriculture. I had been involved in 4-H for 11 years, and you could say this is what sparked my interest in the field of agriculture. This program has taught me to respect the field of agriculture and understand that this field of study has become my passion.
The first of the reasons that I have chosen to pursue a career in agriculture is because of my involvement in 4-H. Being involved in 4-H has shown me how much joy is brought to me by the field of agriculture. I first considered many careers in the health field, but was always wondering if I would truly enjoy those careers. I then took the time to consider the many things that I enjoyed. At the top of this list was working with my 4-H animals over the summer, which includes the following: choosing and feeding the best feed daily to produce the highest quality of animal, daily exercising the animal to produce muscle, and washing the animal daily to maintain a healthy skin and hair. From morning chores to checking our small herd of Angus cattle in the winter, I quickly learned that we put the need of our animals over our own. These morals were instilled in me as I began to care for my own show livestock. Days consisted of coming home and making sure that my show livestock were receiving the proper feed rations along with the proper amount of exercise. Throughout my show career, I realized my passion for finding the perfect feed ration that allows for maximum productivity in my show hogs.
