The dictionary might define “agriculture” as something that relates to the soil, crops and livestock, but to me, it is worth much more than that. Agriculture is perhaps one of the biggest industries in the world. Just as there are countless agricultural commodities, there are countless stories behind those like me who have made the decision to pursue agriculture as a career, and often, no two are the same. Though there are some who did, most of us in the AEC department don’t come from farms, and that’s okay. Like I said above, agriculture today is more than farming, and it’s unique, just like all of us in AEC. Myself, I do not come from a farm. If anyone looks hard enough, anyone can find a place within the industry, even just as a consumer. After all, everyone eats. The ability to do almost anything and the acceptance of people who may be “different” than the norm are some of the strongest things that have kept me working towards my goals within agriculture. Agriculture’s place for me wasn’t on a farm, though my journey has taken me to many. Skills such as event planning, team leadership, use of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere and more that I have learned in class and used through assignments AND real-world opportunities such as my three internships have helped prepare me for my goals. Courses over agricultural issues, the agricultural education system, UF/IFAS and other related topics have broadening my knowledge, making me a better person and better equipped
