My name is Khemiga Khemacheevakul. I am currently enrolled as an international, second year student at the University of Alberta, and I am majoring in the four year Bachelor of Food Science and Technology program. As a future graduate of this program I will have a variety of job prospects that I may choose from. Examples include jobs in the food industry as a food biochemist, food microbiologist, food products inspector, food products sales representative, food scientist, or a food and beverage supervisor. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (2009), HACCP coordinators are classified as Inspection managers (IM), and the salary range for this group ranges from $88,625 to $106,740 depending on different levels of the position; a level 1 inspection manager has an average annual salary of $88,625, while a level 4 inspection manager has an average annual salary of $99,174. (Canadian Food Inspection Agency, 2012). The 2013 Alberta Wage and Salary Survey as well as the Institute of Food Technologists’ (IFT) biennial Employment and Salary Survey both indicate a similar figure. Values reported were an overall annual average salary of $82,460 (Alberta Government) and a median salary of $90,000 respectively (Hennessy 2014). Contrastingly, it is suggested by Payscale (2014) that HACCP coordinators in Canada earn an average salary of only $44,572 per year. Many job postings for HACCP coordinators and similar positions (Cargill Limited 2014, Nestle Purina PetCare Can, Young 2014) specify that the minimum education requirement is a Bsc in food science, microbiology, agriculture, biochemistry, chemistry or related science (Alberta Government); a Bsc in food science is often preferred. It should be noted that “foreign degrees in food science are usually accepted in Canada” (Evans 2013).
