My passion and motivation to pursue a career in pharmacy ignited from when I was admitted to hospital with a submandibular abscess. I was in so much pain, and even today, I still cannot believe the tremendous effect of the prescription drugs used to ease my pain. This instance served to fuel my curiosity for pharmaceutical medication and its beneficial effect on the human body. This led me to research medically related courses and I developed an interest in the field of pharmacy and study at a higher level would broaden my knowledge on how drugs are formed into suitable medicines and their use in treating diseases. I completed a Safe Handling of Medicines course, through which I recognise the importance of keeping medication safe by adhering to legal and ethical guidelines. I learnt about the definition and properties of controlled drugs and the process of their administration by qualified staff based upon dosage, timing, appropriate storage and up to date recording. I also gained an insight into the need for high levels of accuracy when administering medication, checking both medicinal and client details. One can achieve this by double checking with another staff member, thus minimising human error through counter signing. I also learned why it is important to have in depth knowledge of medicinal ingredients in case of patient allergies and how crucial it is for clients to complete the course of medication to ensure its efficiency. In this position I also improved my personal skills through working with clients and staff and adopted a flexible approach to taking on and generating new ideas.
