I have been committed to volunteer as an English and math tutor at Oakland international high school since 2013.a high school that was founded with the help of the bill and Melinda gates foundation for new comers to the united states. It was a great experience for me. Even though I’m only volunteering once a week, due to having two jobs, I still believe I’m making a deference in someone’s life. This contribution to my community is important to me, because I have many things in common with the students in this high school, not only do these students have a tremendous academic disadvantage in the education system, some of them have never been to school before, and some of them have arrived to this country without their parents, and they carry the same ambition I have of becoming successful and returning to their home countries to support their families. also when I first arrived to this country, I had the same background with these kids, I lacked basic skills in math and English and I hoped there was someone there to help. I’m offering my help to these kids hoping they will grow their math and English skills, and become successful in order for them to achieve their dreams, same way I have. Despite it being a small contribution to society, I’m proud of not just being a tutor for these students but a mentor as well, having experienced the same they had, hoping that my encouragement helps my student mentees to accomplish their goals and dreams in life. I learned a lot about their bravery when coming to this country, and their ambition to achieve their goals. I’m committed to keep helping them, until they achieve their goals so we can build a better and a stronger educated community. I’m proud that I got to become a leader by being committed to an issue I care
