I am particularly interested in the field of social studies. George Santayana, a renowned Spanish scholar, once said, “Those who do not remembered the past are condemned to repeat it.” History is truly all around society. Every social interaction or contact occurs due to something in the past that caused it. The study of society and its evolution is at the forefront of all careers and the foundation of many of the processes society depends on as a whole. Thus, it has become an integral aspect of my life, which I enjoy learning more about in the classroom. In the summer of 2014, I took the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam in Human Geography and received a 5 on the exam. This exam tested my knowledge of the interactions between different groups of people and the impact they have on their environment. My success in the class highlighted my ability to use my base of historical skills. Additionally, I received a 4 on the AP World History Exam this summer. This class allowed me expand my knowledge of social studies to countries around the world and broadened my exposure to the facts and histories of other cultures. My social studies skills have been applied outside of the classroom in the form of several extracurricular activities. I am an executive leader of my school’s Student Government Association. In addition to this, my knowledge of social studies was used in my experiences in the field of policy debate. I have skills, both inside and outside of the classroom, which assist me with not only my education but other areas of my life as well. I am adept in the area of social studies, with several achievements in the field. Being selected as a Finalist would allow me to further expand my knowledge of social studies and apply this knowledge in realistic environments. My skills in this field can equip me to make a positive impact of the world. Social studies is all around me, and being a part of this program will only allow me to more greatly appreciate the study of this topic. In addition to background knowledge on the subject, I have numerous skills that would be beneficial as a Finalist of this program. I feel as though I am a proficient student and determined worker. My commitment to work, my communication skills, my creative thinking, as well as my belief in teamwork will serve as useful. These qualities will allow me to effectively work with my teammates and allow us to complete our tasks to the best of our collective abilities and strengths, and by making all members have a sense of belonging and common goal.
