Volunteering refers to freely offering up your time to do something without having to be asked. In my opinion, the basis of volunteering and service is initiative. Initiative is taking charge without others having to tell you to, so you can see how the two things correlate. For example, if you want to volunteer in your community, you need to have that independence in you to go forth and pursue something to help others and unite a community. In summary, on the way to help others, you first need a sense of independence and initiative to get there. Someone in my life that I look up to is my mother. Ever since elementary school, I have always had the initiative and determination to obtain excellent grades. Throughout my whole middle school/ high school experience I have maintained all A’s. I have been awarded many academic awards such as Science awards and English awards, but I see the awards I have received for my responsibility just as beneficial. I have managed to procure these grades even with my heavy sports schedule and have no doubt that I would be able to hold the position of Junior VP, because I know the importance of dedication. This past summer I was accepted into the Commissioner’s School of Excellence. This experience taught me that an important quality of leaders is the ability to step out of your comfort zone. As it says in an issue of Entrepreneur magazine, “leadership is making important, but unpopular decisions”. This quote explains how integrity goes hand in hand with being a successful leader. I think one of the most prominent qualities I have that relates to being a successful leader is my ability to be a good team player. Through my many years of sports, I have won a good share of championships, which has led to my realization that the only way to truly succeed is through your ability to collaborate with others to reach your main goal.
