Nursing has become a very dynamic role as it is constantly changing and evolving. The number of people entering the nursing field continues to increase. The responsibilities nurses are held accountable for are very diverse and demanding. Mental health nursing is one of the many diverse fields a nurse must be educated in. A nurse must be competent in attending to a patient’s mental health as it is something that pertains to all patients regardless of race, origin, or religion.
I am applying for a Mental Health Nursing Mater’s degree because I want to help people who suffer from mental illness. With the skills I have acquired whilst working as a support worker and whilst undergoing a pyschaitric clinical course and practical as a nursing student, I believe I will achieve my goal of being a mental health Nurse practitioner. I gained some insight into a mental health career whilst undergoing my clinical rotations in a big psychiatric hospital back in my home country of Nigeria. The role includes writing care plans, interacting with the patients as well as carrying out ward rounds with a group of healthcare professionals. I would like to expand my knowledge further at a degree level and possibly higher.
My educational goal to pursue a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a specialization in Trauma and Crisis Counseling is a result of my personal life experiences and my admiration for those who work in this field, dedicated to helping those who may feel dragged down by toxic cycles and heavy memories, like myself once did, to create a life filled with meaning. As a Sociology major in my undergraduate career, I’ve always been interested in other people and why they operate the way that they do. It wasn’t long after earning my bachelors that I came to the belief that my past experiences and mental health journey could become my superpower to help others, and that if I wish for society to collectively feel better, then the focus on
My growing desire to become a counselor can only be exceeded by the growing need for dedicated and competent clinical mental health counselors in today’s managed care setting. I firmly believe the advancement of our society has fundamentally changed the managed care landscape. As an intern at Hudson Partnership Care Management Organization (CMO), I service children and adolescents that have multiple and complex emotional and behavioral health challenges. As a public health educator intern, my job is to help these children live happy, healthy and productive lives by providing families and the child with programs to help the children stay out of trouble and many in-house programs to help control the individual emotional or behavioral challenges.
I have worked in the healthcare field now for 23 years. I worked for 2 years as an LPN in a Veteran Affairs Hospital. Following my BSN graduation, I worked as an RN in a variety of specialties before deciding I was ready to advance my knowledge with an MSN degree. I have worked as an FNP in a variety of settings for the past 10+ years. I have spent my entire life hearing discussions related to the challenges of mental health as a profession and the satisfaction that comes from helping others.
In pursuing my aspiration to become a clinical mental health counselor, I am driven by a deep-rooted desire to serve others, drawing strength from my Christian values, military background, experiences in foster care, and unwavering determination. Although I may not claim to possess the sharpest intellect, my unwavering work ethic and unyielding spirit to overcome challenges motivate me to fulfill my destined purpose of assisting and empowering individuals on their healing journeys. It is this purpose that drives me to persevere when I feel unworthy. I have found one message that has pushed me every day that I didn’t want to go to class or continue my journey. From Galatians 6:2, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill
Personal Statement for Nursing School “When a person decides to become a Nurse. They make the most important decision of their lives. They choose to dedicate themselves to the care of others” Growing up in Nigeria; I had my first introduction to the field of medicine at the age of 6. At the time, my grand father was a holistic doctor at my local community. Whenever my grandfather went to work, he would take me with him and I remembered being very fascinated by how people would come in to get treatments for different kinds of diseases.
Personal Statement My passion for the mental health counseling field became solidified in college. Since the first few days at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, I quickly became known as the problem solver. As time went on I was the listening ear and shoulder to cry on for many of my friends and acquaintances. They would come to me with their educational advice, relationship problems, and even family issues.
Service and outreach in the public interest. Looking back in my high school day my mind was clueless. Many people would ask what I want to do in life; my answer was simply, reaching others potentials in life. I really was not sure how, when, where or who I would assist with life endeavors. But, I was certain that Counseling was my field of interest.
My decision to study mental health nursing came from my research, personal and work experience. The Department of Health (2002) publication highlighted the challenges healthcare professionals are facing when they are supporting people with a mental health illness and substance misuse problems (alcohol and drugs). This is one of the biggest challenges for the health service (DH, 2002). My aim in the future is to be part of the healthcare professional that would care and support people with mental health problems and make a difference in people’s lives.
I would like to study nursing because I feel it will lead me directly to one of the most emotionally fulfilling careers available, as well as giving me the chance combine helping people's mental well being with their physical health. It would give me the opportunity to study something that involves both academic and practical study, which I feel would suit me best. My ambition to study for a degree in Mental Health Nursing and to make my career in this field has developed out of my own experience of working in the caring profession and helping to solve the problems of patients suffering from a variety of mental disabilities. For some years I have worked in a nursing home for those with mental health conditions, as well as caring for troubled children.
Among the reasons for deciding to apply for a mental health nursing course, my 'why' and motivation to pursue a career as a mental health nurse was experiencing the loss of my best friend unfortunately due to suicide. Such a life-changing loss deepened my existing drive to want to help people recover and heal from mental health struggles and traumatic experiences. The human mind is so complex and a phenomenon that I find intriguing and love to learn about, particularly human mental processes, mental health disorders and behaviours. I believe I am suitable for this course because, alongside having a passion for helping the community to cope with mental illnesses and my compassionate, nurturing characteristics.
Personal Statement I am interested in studying for a degree in the Mental Health Nursing in your university, and I would like to make my career in this noble profession. I first considered nursing as a career some years ago, after I lost my father to a chronic kidney disease. The role played by the nurses in terms of care while he was in hospital and after his death was quite overwhelming. Although I had my first degree in Agricultural Economics, but this nothing in compare to the passion I later developed for nursing after the death of my father. I have since developed myself in health and social care sector by training and updating my skills.
It was in my 3rd year of BSC Nursing that i discovered my passion for mental health and psychology, then I made up my mind to go for it , Back in my country we tend to neglect mental health illness. A lot of people in my country don’t believe mental health exist. In black community or my country in general we seem to believe we are strong, nothing can break us down, it has gotten into us so much that we don’t believe in mental illness. There is also a social stigma for health professionals studying any psychiatry or psychology course in my country it is seem irrelevant, we have just one percent of mental health workers in my country. I want to be a part of generation that creates awareness to my country about mental
