Working hard reaps rewards and allows a person to mature, and Cory Mehnert is an excellent example of this. As Cory sits down across the table, she smiles at me, completely at ease. With a little prompting, she tells me a little background information, telling me that her first year of college was at Butler University in Indianapolis from 1998 to 1999. She originally majored in international management, but switched her major, stating that, “I knew I wanted to have a big family and I realized that I did not want to be travelling internationally and be away from my children.
It is no secret that today’s society is fast paced and success oriented. People live their lives as if money and work are the ultimate sources of happiness, despite the popular proverb that suggests precisely the opposite. In his article, Mark Edmundson delves into this catastrophe and attempts to explain both how and why it occurs. He states in the first paragraph that he sees his students as “people who are in the process of choosing a way to make money and succeed, a strategy for getting on in life.” Edmundson says that the ideals of courage, wisdom and compassion are fading away in culture today.
Lastly, working as a child care provider in a daycare setting improved my leadership skills and taught me the meaning of unconditional love. These past experiences have morphed me into the person I am today and enriched the lives of individuals I have encountered through serving others. I take pride in the way I handle myself in a professional work environment, and plan on giving my all to the Pathways to Healthcare

To be more specific, my career goals are to study business and accounting and then work for some sort of corporation
My father owned a small landscaping company, and I proudly considered myself his partner. The manual labor was exhausting and it never seemed the days would end. Being a small family business, it was up to everyone to contribute to make it successful. Surely, my attitude during that time wasn’t always intent to cut grass or build rock walls as I watched my friends have more fun than myself, but the experiences I received would become invaluable, and would far outweigh my lack of free time. I was taught the importance of working hard, being honest, being grateful for what I had and taking the time to help others.

My grandpa is a hard working guy and never gives up on anything he sets his mind to do. Moving to autonomy v. shame and doubt, I asked him what his greatest achievements were and he told me, “Being the director of Watkins Health Center I guess. I didn’t know where I was going to work so I went to business school to get a good job like that. Finishing my masters degree and that let me be qualified candidate for the job.”.
I’m applying to GMU in hopes of obtaining a bachelor’s degree in psychology. I want to obtain my degree not only for myself, but for my mother as well. She left her native country of Nicaragua as a political refugee at the tender age of twenty-one. Leaving her family and leaving all hopes of ever completing her degree in education behind. I admire her for coming to a foreign country, not knowing the language and having very limited opportunities, but not letting that discourage her.
This small story was very intriguing for me. Most times, the obvious realities are the ones that are hard to see and talk about. As I was marching toward my ‘bright future’ on my career timeline, I was hit with the ‘What are you going to do after this?’

I desire to be a teacher that takes time out of my day to have meaningful minutes in a student’s life and to represent the picture of a positive role- model. I hope to leave a lasting impact by creating a caring atmosphere that allows students to express themselves, discover knowledge, and obtain their fullest potential confidently!
The phrase: “Helping others is the way we help ourselves” from Oprah Winfrey inspired me to choose this profession. Helping people solve their problems, giving them the opportunity to let off steam and share their feelings through confidential talks makes this profession unique and exceptional. I have abilities and values, such as: persistence, kindness, and loyalty, that are highlighted and essential to this job. Also, I have a plan that I will already start following it because this is what I want to be.
