“It is not in life, but in art that self-fulfillment is to be found.”-Wilson Mizner. Many view art as a hobby, and something that shouldn’t be taken seriously. When they envision someone who is pursuing art or who has as interest in art, they imagine the person living under a bridge or frequenting the local soup kitchen. They don’t comprehend the impact that art has on an individual and its lasting significance it leaves on that individual. During my school years, I took many different classes, some I enjoyed and others I struggled through. But I know that some of the things I’ve learnt, there are some that I will fade quickly. Such as, in a few years I will barely remember what the ionization energy of magnesium is! Likewise, art has taught me more about life than all those classes combined. As I was fascinated on how an idea could be made into something physical and unique and this fascination inspired me to be a fashion designer. To follow that dream, I picked up pencils and begun drawing. I spent hours watching how to videos and searching famous fashion designers trying to copy each of their designs. Page by page, I slowly filled up each page of a timeworn college ruled notebook; some pages were filled with designs I envisioned, others of designs I admired. Coming home from school, would result in hours on end, spent practicing new designs, with each stroke done carefully. Nevertheless, to little avail, my drawings were still mere chicken scratches. But art hadn’t seen the last of me; Vincent Van Gogh’s quote of “if you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”, resonated with me. I knew that even though I wasn’t as good as some of the designs, I couldn’t give up what I spent hours
