Sometimes I still lie awake at night thinking about the day one of my kindergarten students told me his mother helped his uncle bury the under-aged girl he’d murdered. It’s absurd how you can hear this story on the news and assume nothing of it after a few minutes, but when a five-year-old is crying to you because his mother is now in jail, it will never be the same for you.
At the age of 17, I graduated from high school and by 20 years old, I graduated from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communication Disorders. In both of the facilities I have had the opportunity to work with a high number of students with disorders and troubled children, which inspired me to go into the masters of Education in Counseling and Guidance. Currently where I work, Garza-Pena Elementary has been proven to be 92.7% economically disadvantaged and 87.6% of the 662 students are academically at risk. As a teacher assistant who has been working for only a brief amount of time, I have heard numerous stories from my students and guardians about their troubled homes. Many students lack sleep, consistently cry at school, and display aggressive behaviors due to their inability of expressing their suffering. The fact that children in elementary are experiencing these kinds of emotions is heartbreaking seeing that I can relate, if only to a limited degree, to the pain they’re going through. I don’t want to stand on the sidelines watching a young child experience misery and hardships. I yearn to be the catalyst that helped transform the lives of these children by showing them that they do not stand alone. While being in the speech therapist field and education field I believe I have acquired the proper knowledge and experience in working with troubled kids and children with disorders. I am proud to say that I have succeeded in gaining the students rapport and trust, while keeping my professional boundaries. Each and every day I feel a form of accomplishment because a student came to me to show me how they did in school through their multi-tiered system of support chart, to seek for advice, to tell me that i’m the only teacher they can trust and work hard for. My students are the reason for pushing me to obtain the proper knowledge of Counseling and Guidance to help them reach their full potential in
