Personal Statement: Pursuing A Career In Law

My name us Dulcie Brennan and I am in my first year of Sixth Form at Trent College in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. I am writing to ask if you would consider an application from me for work experience with you during summer 2017.

Over the past couple of years I have sought out experience relevant to my interests in a career in law and public relations. I recently undertook a week long placement at Northamptonshire County Council; I worked in Democratic Services and spent time interviewing councillors and performing administration tasks. I am very interested in pursuing a career in law. I enjoy debating and the process of gathering points and developing an argument and I am keen to develop those skills and to incorporate them into my career. I have always been interested in the law, how legal cases work and what is involved. I hope to practice law as a career because law regulates and impacts everything we do from everyday tasks, like buying something from a shop, to landmarks in our life such as buying a house. Law affects everyone regardless of age, size, race, religion or favourite sport, meaning it unites people, it is a combined public conscience that shows us right from wrong. Law is international; no matter where you live in the world there are a set of laws to guide your community. As part of that, I also learned new skills prepping food in a local restaurant and undertook voluntary work in my local community, where I built up my social skills. I also took part in my school’s Combined Cadet Force (army) last year where I learnt a lot about discipline, cooperation and working as part of a team, skills that I have also developed through being a part of my school’s hockey and netball teams. For two years I have also taken part in a Leadership Programme run by my school which teaches about responsibility, independence, public speaking and leading and motivating a team. For the first year I, as part of a team, ran an after-school dance class for year 7s new to the school. This taught me about managing and leading a group and helped me develop my people skills (as well as some pretty good dance routines). This year I am running an art class for younger children.
