Recommended: Traits of a knight
The three ideas of chivalry are respect, integrity, and honor. First of all, the knights are always respectful of the people around them. They have the kindest words towards, people. The knights are also protective of the citizens in Camelot, as shown in the movie. The respect that the knights have for their country is like the men at war,
Knights have always fascinated people with their daring deeds and good manners. In the Pearl Poet’s “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” the Green Knight arrives at King Arthur’s castle to Challenge his Knights, but no one accepts the challenge until finally, Arthur stands up. Eventually, Sir Gawain accepts the challenge and has his reputation challenged along the way. When Sir Gawain became a knight, he promised to live by the Code of Chivalry just like I live my life by a set of rules. My code of honor shares similarities with the Code of Chivalry.
In medieval England, social status and rank are very important in everyday life. There are some things a person is obligated to do because of his/her social rank, and some things a person is forbidden to do because of his/her social class. In the movie, the Knight’s Tale there is a very good example of how social classes can not do certain things beyond their class. William Thatcher, for example cannot technically be a knight by birth because he is born into the lower social class.
First Knight display some of the classical aspects of chivalry, with the most prominent aspect being loyalty as is demonstrated in the repeated use of the pledge that the Knights of the Round Table say to each other during initiation ceremonies and during crucial moments of the film, "Brother to brother. Yours in life and death." Lancelot is shown as a flawed man, but an incredibly masculine and chivalrous one and those qualities allow him to be redeemed of his affair with Guinevere and he gains the recognition from Arthur as the quintessential knight moments before Arthur's death, "My truest. My first knight." This is an accurate depiction of the Arthurian lore in the sense that Lancelot's chivalrous nature was enough to earn the forgiveness of Arthur because of Arthur's extremely chivalrous nature, but the rest of the characterizations of Lancelot are more reflective of modern chivalry.
In the Middle Ages the knights Code of chivalry was apart of the culture. The sacred oaths were meant for the Knights to follow so that they would have strict rules of etiquette and conduct to follow. The Code of chivalry used by the medieval Knights was founded on biblical truths because the church governed people's lives. Through researching the codes of keeping the faith, obeying those in authority, and living by honor and glory it is apparent that the codes were founded on biblical truths. One code used by medieval Knights was to keep the faith.
During the Medieval times chivalry was one of the most important characteristics a knight could display. Chivalry was viewed as a moral obligation that involved bravery, honor, respect, and gallantry. Knights were expected to uphold this code or face social consequences for any infractions, with punishments ranging from humiliation to termination of their knighthood. “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight” presents the struggles knights faced with honoring the chivalrous code at all times. Sir Gawain, while imperfect, exhibits qualities expected of knights and embodies the internal struggle between honoring the chivalrous code and giving into selfish desires.
I have burned down two villages, three castles, and all of Camelot. Why am I so hungry? It must be that spell that Merlin casted on me, I thought he tasted funny. I could still eat, I think that I will take Beowulf’s Kingdom, after all that thief did try to steal my treasure, he tasted so good. I can fly 20,000 leagues in a minute, taking Beowulf’s kingdom will easiest thing I have done in years.
