Personal Statement: Why I Give Back To Hawaii

How would I give back to Hawaii?

As a young adult with aspirations to leave the beautiful islands I grew up on and head to the mainland to create a new life there, I will never forget where I came from. Hawaii will always be my home, the place I was born, raised, and paved in to the person I am today. Although my body will be far from here in a few years, my heart will always remain in Hawaii.

In the spring of 2018 I will be attending my first year of college at Hawaii community college in Hilo. I will be studying sociology and kinesiology. I grew up in a very difficult environment with a single mom and multiple younger siblings. When I was around 10 years old my siblings and I was placed into foster care because my mom was unable to take care of us due to the drugs and men in her life. Eventually I was able to move in with relatives but not long until I was taken away again. I experienced 10 foster homes within 2 years. The things I have experienced, endured, and conquered are the reasons why I am going into sociology. I want to become a social worker and do everything in my …show more content…

Kids in my neighborhood were so active from being on skateboards, bikes, and scooters, to playing it, stick the prick, and basketball. I fell in love with sports and exercise from an early age despite being overweight majority of my life. My love for exercise, learning how the body moves and functions, was highly increased because of the fact I was overweight. I played basketball for many years but by the time I was in 8th grade I ended up breaking my leg and it’s been prone to injury ever since. I remember going into rehab every day and to see what physical therapist do for a living inspired me. Being able to have so much knowledge on the human body to create a permanent change in someone’s life for continuous progress. That’s the reason I choose kinesiology as another major of
