I am meticulous. I am conscientious, analytical and exacting. This is how I characterized myself in the introductory paper for my course in theories of personality. The personality inventory included with the assignment diagnosed me with a predilection for empirical data and logical reasoning. It informed me that personality types like mine thrive in occupations that reward organization and accuracy. Its career recommendation was law. I had no plans to pursue an education in law when I began my undergraduate degree four years ago. I did not dream of law school as a child, nor did I experience a distinct, life-changing event that compelled me to fight for justice. Nevertheless, my undergraduate experiences were transformative. Throughout my certification, I was afforded opportunities to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to immigrants and international students. As a student teacher, I spent months tutoring an illiterate female refugee whose country’s gendered education policies had left her unable to recognize her own name in writing. Conversely, I also taught university-educated men who had been forced to take entry-level jobs because Canadian employers had rejected their foreign credentials. These experiences provoked me to expand my conceptions of justice and equality. U of T’s diverse selection of clinics and public interests programs offers students unparalleled opportunities to gain practical experience and get involved in the legal community. Given my personal interests and professional ambitions, I am particularly excited by the prospect of participating in the Refugee and immigration law clinic and the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights. Further, I have an abiding personal and academic interest in women’s issues; therefore, I would be interested in pursuing U of T’s unique Sexual Diversity & Gender Studies certificate
