Abstract Every person has a characteristic manner of thinking, feeling, and relating to others. Some of these personality traits can be so dysfunctional as to warrant a diagnosis of personality disorder. The World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD- 10) includes ten personality disorder diagnoses. Three issues of particular importance for the diagnosis of personality disorders are their differentiation from other mental disorders, from general personality functioning, and from each other. Each of these issues is discussed in turn, and it is suggested that personality disorders are more accurately and effectively diagnosed as maladaptive variants of common personality traits. Causation, Diagnosis, and Treatment Causation Each person is created with their own unique personality combined of emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. A person’s personality often determines the way they view them self and the world around them, is formed at a young age, and shaped through communication. Two factors have key roles in shaping your personality; • Your genes- Personality traits are derived from a combination genetic influences you receive from your parents…such as temperament (Mayo Clinic). • Your environment- This includes how you are raised, your surroundings, events that happened, relationships with other family, love and support received, number of risk factors in childhood (Mayo Clinic). Research has found that psychotherapy can relieve some symptoms. A patient can do psychotherapy on a one-to-one one basis strictly between the therapist or seek a group for more support. The therapy would be centered around; Types of psychotherapy used to treat BPD include: • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT works to help change a personal belief system, behavior, or misconception of others. Can help reduce can help people with BPD identify and change core beliefs and/or behaviors that underlie inaccurate perceptions of themselves and others and problems interacting with others. CBT may help reduce a range of mood and anxiety symptoms and reduce the number of suicidal or self-harming behaviors (NIMH). • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): This type of therapy works to address acceptance, mindfulness, and techniques that help establish emotional regulation and control over thoughts and behaviors (NIMH). • Schema-Focused Therapy: This type of therapy teaches someone to act instead of react allowing them to practice reframing skills by addressing false beliefs possibly established in childhood
