Personality Disorders - Schizophrenia A class of mental disorders where a person’s actions are so bizarre that they are unable to function are referred to as psychotic disorders which are exhibited by schizophrenia or associated problems (Kearney &Trull, 2018). Schizophrenia is a severe psychotic disorder that requires continuous treatment. Early detection of the disorder is key in controlling symptoms and providing a more positive long-term mindset (Mayo Clinic Staff, 2020).

Alan has always been one of the team’s best EMTs, however, he has recently begun to display bizarre behavior at work. Recently, Alan became upset and blamed others for their obstruction when he was unable to revive a deceased patient by just touching the patient. Approximately two months prior Alan started sharing with his coworkers how he had been provided divine powers that allowed him the ability to save people’s lives with just a touch of his hand. Alan claimed that he had been at the beach feeding birds when a bird landed on his hand and sent an electrical charge through his hand and body. At this point, he knew that he was meant to save lives. Additionally, Alan claims that he can hear the birds in an influential voice telling him to save the lives of those that have recently passed. Also, if Alan does not receive treatment before long, the self-stigma that is associated with schizophrenia will have a negative impact on Alan and his recovery. Due to Alan’s profession, once he does receive a diagnosis of schizophrenia, he will most likely keep it to himself for fear that others will not want to work with him due to the lack of confidence they have in him performing the job as trained.
