Introducing sugar taxes to NZ is great way to prevent many people developing obesity over time. Consumption of high surgery drinks is leading individuals to have serious health problems. According to NZ health survey, “1.2 million kiwis are obese, that is 3 in every 10 adults and 1 in 9 children” (Watkins 2015). Sugary beverages contain high intake of bad calories that doesn’t have appropriate nutritional value. Sugar taxes promote people to drink less sugar and choose healthier beverages as a result of taxes being too expensive. Sugar taxes subsides increase people to consume healthier beverages for instance fruit juice. Consumers improve diets from tax subsides being introduced, healthy companies produce more healthier drinks for people to purchase. According to Euromontier International (2014) “healthy companies continue to put pressure on manufactures to reduce sugar in products such as bread, prep meals and dairy and provide clear nutrition labels about products”. The reductionist of sugar level in beverages will improve health over time compared to sugary beverages that contain high intake calories. “Coca cola was forced to switch to cheaper, high fructose corn syrup from cane sugar” (Blinch, 2013). The aspects of soda companies reducing sugar is a good benefit as it provides people to consume fewer calories which means a decrease in total caloric intake daily. Despite with the sugar tax people are still willing to purchase unsweetened beverages. Creating tax on sugar is not that main answer to reduce obesity in NZ. Health minister stated “there was no evidence a sugar tax worked and further regulation was not the answer to NZ's obesity problem” (Watkins, 2015). However it is argued that Associated Press (2015) stated "Taxation on higher sugar may encourage consumers to reduce consumption of soft drinks it is insisted that introducing sugar taxes will consider people to start to purchase healthier sodas. People are still getting fatter despite sugar taxes being introduced. The evidence shows the effect of sugar tax does not change people consuming less rather according to “NZ has 300% difference between price of budget of soda and the brand leader, if sugar tax does not affect buying behaviour” (NZ food grocery council, n,d) , it’s likely that consumers are consuming soft drinks with lower calories due to a switch of soda brands that is cheaper. Nonetheless sugar taxes is debated to be a requirement for NZ in the long run because sugar taxes will change consumers’ behaviour/knowledge on unhealthy
