How would you feel if you couldn’t drive until you graduated? The legislature is considering to require a high school degree before he or she could receive a driver’s license. This could be seen as a motivator to graduate or a safety precaution to make better, more mature drivers, but it takes away the beginnings of freedom necessary before college and the means of transportation to a job or extracurricular activities.
A big part of highschool is becoming more independent to become more prepared for college or life, and driving is one of the biggest symbols of independence. When this independence is taken away, many opportunities to be prepared are taken away with it. The absolute freedom of college or life is usually a big change already. Often times, parents are too busy to drive their child everywhere they want to go, so teen driving is already more convenient in that respect. If teens cannot get to where they want to be, that takes away lots of possible memories or opportunities, such as various clubs or school social events, that they could’ve had while driving. From personal experience, I have missed or have been late to many parties, club meetings, or even school because my parents were late and I had to wait for them to drive me. Once I am able to drive, I will feel a responsibility to be more on time, and I feel that it will help me feel in control and organized in other aspects of my life as well. A major experience that teens would miss out on would be a job, simply for the reason that they would have no way of getting there. Jobs teach time and money management, social skills, organization, and what it’s like after graduation. These are some of the most important lessons that a teen can learn before leaving the house, so it would be a big loss if this bill was
