British Columbia scraps exams : Don’t eliminate, just cooperate. You’re in a grade 12 physics class and you find out there are only two free spots left at Waterloo University for engineering. You really want to get in, what do you think would be the most fair way to determine who gets the two spots? Perhaps a standardised exam? So why are we getting rid of all these exams? Oh i know because getting rid of exams is totally going to make my students smarter. What is the british columbian government thinking? Taking away exams from my students is like taking away a judge from a court. It just isn’t fair. Thats funny because i don't recall anybody asking me whether or not i was okay with this decision and the last time I checked i too was a BC teacher. Ever since i started teaching, there was always 5 main provincial examinations and now it will be cut down to two. Two of the “core” courses, English and Math. I can't speak to much about the other courses but in terms of the sciences, there is a lot of thinking involved and a lot of practice is required. British Colombia’s main issue is that our examinations are teaching students how to memorize and not to understand, which is not true. Students must be able to use their knowledge from their past and apply it. If students can’t do it now, when will they be able to? I mean okay, there is a lot of stress when it comes to exams, but just abolishing them is not going to help. Maybe lower the weight of the exam so there isn’t so much pressure or increase the time given for the exam. I can guarantee that no university/ college is planning on abolishing exams anytime soon so it's better that students get into the habit now.
