Why is homecoming such a big deal here in DeWitt? I mean, it’s celebrated in high schools all over the US. Ours can’t be that special, right? But it is. Our whole week is filled with dress up days and assemblies and then it all ends with a football game and a dance. How does our homecoming set us apart from others though? I asked multiple people and everybody agreed that it is our spirit and our bond with each other that sets us apart. From the first day of September, the community is thrilled for homecoming. Girls pick out their dresses weeks or even months in advance and the boys start planning out how they will ask that special someone to the dance. On homecoming week, everybody has a smile on their face and it feels like Christmas week. The day seems to go by very slowly, even though hardly any work is being done in the classroom. Everybody is too busy discussing their plans for that night’s football game, what their attire will look like for the dance the next day, and so on. Finally the last bell rings, indicating the end of a long school day, and everybody rushes out of their classrooms excited for the following hours. The game is finally starting and the student section is singing as the band plays the fight song. The onlooking parents and students are nervous for the team, because they want them to pull out a great win. The game goes by and whether they win or lose, the student section is still cheering as loudly as they can and lining up to make a tunnel for the football players to pass through as they exit the field.
