Kevin Bales once said, "Slavery is theft- theft of a life, theft of work, theft of any property or produce, theft even of the children a slave might have borne" (Bales). The sentiment of Bale’s quote is applicable today. The present day form of slavery is human trafficking; not only does trafficking forcibly revoke a person’s freedom, but it completely denies a person of any chance to escape and create a healthy life. Human trafficking is an illegal practice of procuring and trading human beings for the purpose of prostitution, forced labor, or other forms of exploitation (Dictionary.com). Modern slavery is a violation of human rights taken from innocent people. Although many people are unaware of human trafficking, it affects a large percentage of the world’s population. Everyone is aware of suppression that occurred over the course of history, but not everyone knows about the slavery that exists today. Currently, there are more than 29 million people living in slavery, which is the greatest number in history. There are many things that society does not know about human trafficking. Human trafficking is a 32 billion dollar business that forces innocent adults and children into either the sex trade or into working against their will. Traffickers go after innocent people and promise them a better life. They search for runaway boys and girls at train, bus, and subway stations, and even send out the “worker” they trust the most to lure people in. Traffickers send out their main woman workers because young girls are found to trust women more than they would trust a man. Each year in the United States around 15,000 people are forcibly being taken.
