Approximately 25 million animals are used each year in the United States for scientific research. This research has been occurring since 500 BC. Most people think that animal experimentation is the only method of discovering new cures and medicine; but in fact there are alternative methods. For example, vitro testing, stem cell, micro-dosing and artificial human skin are all methods that scientists can use besides animal testing. Animal experimentation contributes too many life-saving treatments although it’s an unnecessary process. With alternative methods, there is no need for animal testing.
Animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, dogs and many other animals are used for testing each year. Animals are often mistreated, and 95 percent of them are not protected by Animal Welfare Act; the rights and protections of animals. However, these laws are not regulated as well as they should be. “Even animals who are covered by the law can be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs and brain-damaged” (“Medical Testing

Animals are forced to be tested; they don’t have a choice, even though they can feel the same thing humans do. Jeremy Bentham wrote in the 1700s “The question is not, Can they reason? Nor, Can they talk? But, Can They suffer?” (“Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?”). No pain is desirable animals can’t speak therefore they can’t say they don’t want to be tested on. They can feel pain just like humans can. Humans don’t want to be tested on because they would think its torture. Animals who feel the torture that humans don’t have to experience when animals are being tested. People feel it is wrong and cruel to test on human beings, but what they don’t realize is that animals are similar to us. Animals don’t desire to be tested on; they are forced being locked up in cages against their
