Is Golf a Sport? Many people would consider golf to be a game rather than a sport. Golfers do not have to be great athletes or in terrific physical condition. Golf is accessible to most people and it does not require a team (most times), so it seems to be a game. Golf does require skill, practice, and athleticism, the same as other sports. Pro golfers practice often, are in great physical condition and make a living from golfing. Golf draws many spectators per year. Golf meets the definition of a sport because it takes skill and practice to be a great golfer, and meets the large majority of definitions. A sport is defined as “Sport means all forms of physical activity, which through casual or organised participation, aim at expressing or improving physical fitness and mental well-being, forming social relationships or obtaining results in competition at all levels" by the council of Europe charter on sport (Taylor). The word sport is derived from the French word ‘desport’ meaning “anything humans find amusing or entertaining.” To many people golf is entertaining, making it a sport. The majority of great golfers are in better physical condition than most, and have a rigors training schedule. Golf also requires skill that not every common person posses. It is currently a sport in the summer Olympics. Pro golfers also require some sort of teamwork between them and their catties. Pro golfers make more than enough to live a prosperous life. The pros draw many views form television and spectators at events. Golf may be a casual sport to many, but what is required of the pros is the same as other professional athletes required to compete at a high level. Golf is not like every sport, but that does not mean that it should be excluded form being a sport. It offers accessibility to more people and it should not be disrespected because of
