Luke Stikeleather Mrs. Gallos English 3 12-14-14 Keeping Arts in Education Having arts part of your education is a very important part of schooling. Not only are art classes an outlet for students young and old to be creative, but arts have even been proven to effect their academic classes as well. Seeing art that young kids do can be touching. Sometimes the art we see high schoolers produce can be inspiring. Yet despite the time they put into their art, they tend to be the better students. Because of the benefit that arts education gives to students, arts need to be kept in schools and encouraged for students to take part in. It is shown through extensive research and results, that music definitely makes you “smarter”. In fact, “students who study art are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3 times more likely to be awarded for school attendance” (dosomething.org) . Part of that isn't just intricate science, but also that arts teach responsibility and leadership to all that study it. Many people say that the money required for the classes are just not worth it. Arts supplies are quite a bit. High school bands often take trips to places, and musical instruments can be very expensive as well. Look at this graph (educationnext.org). The “other electives” cost per pupil is considerably higher than the other subjects, with the exception of foreign language. This is when schools run into trouble. How do schools come up with the money to fund all of these expensive art programs? Budget cuts normally hit arts classes the hardest. With the evidence that is shown about what arts classes do for education, schools need more funding for the arts so students can continue to have the luxury and gift of the arts in
