As requested by the University of Ottawa, I am writing this memo to inform you, the first year students, about how networking can benefit your future careers. Through personal experience, I have noticed that networking can helped guide and form a person’s career. Networking allows you, as students, to research and explore your personal interests. Additionally, developing relationships with potential employers can be done by networking. Lastly, networking opens many doors that you may have thought were never an option.

Firstly, participating in networking events allows you to explore what you may like and what you may not. As first year students, it is normal to not know what you want to do in the future and the type of job you want to obtain. There are many options to explore, but it can be difficult without a starting point. A good way to start it by asking someone, such as a professional in their field, questions and advice. The purpose of this type of interview is to learn more about the job and company. It is more so a learning experience than it is a solicitation for a job. An informative interview can also “provide [a] direction in choosing a career path, ... uncover your strengths and weakness [and] revise your resume to better fit the specific industry or career field” (“Networking”, 2017). However, it is equally as important for you need to share your potential work interest. Michael Page (2015) continues to explain that exchanging information and ideas is a key benefit because this allows you to gain new insights that you might have never thought of. Therefore, talking to professional in different fields can open your eyes to many different career options, and allow you to analyze what career is the best fit for you (“Networking”, 2017).
