Ageism is mostly seen in elderly in the United states as most believe the older you get the less you can do. But ageism isn’t only about the rights of the elderly. What about kids? Or in fact young adults? Ageism refers to the stereotypes and discrimination someone may have toward another based on their age. So it does in fact mean it can affect anyone based on their age including kids. Many may not know, but Ageism in kids is important as it can cause the next generation to have less confidence, it can cause kids to do worse in school, and can cause some kids to have worse mental health. How can ageism impact children in school or even at home? Institutional juvenile ageism exists when social systems ignore the interest of children. Students' voice is the right to have a say in matters that affect them, and should be taken seriously. Students should have expression, when students can voice an opinion, consultation, when students are asked for an opinion, participation, when students attend and preferably play an active role in a meeting, partnership, when students have a formal role in decision making, activism, when students can identify a problem and propose a solution, and leadership when students can plan and make decisions with school matters. I know that's a lot to take in but in the end to do these things are really simple in a school environment. Students can comment on teachers' approaches and techniques, suggest topics for class discussion, participate in school policy committees, or just join in a casual conversation on school matters. Participating in school decision-making fosters a sense of citizenship n young learns, which in the long run helps them grow even more. Contributing to their school community gives young learners a sense of belonging , develops self esteems and can lead to more respectful relationships. When people refuse to see ageism as a problem, it can impact a child even more as juvenile ageism enables neglect, abuse, abduction, and even murder in children. While these things only happen in extreme cases it's important to keep this in mind when fighting against ageism. Over time ageism takes a toll on a person as it slowly strips their rights as a person making young people feel as less than a person in society and lead to the person feeling silenced. In fact, negative age stereotypes have led to anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem. Especially in children, often when children are silenced at a young age they believe they do not have a voice or deserve a voice.
