I am writing to you in my capacity as a renowned author and American philosopher to address your institution's use of the disease model of alcoholism to treat addiction. In association with The Baldwin Research Institute, or the BRI, I have dedicated myself to the research and treatment of addiction based upon scientific evidence in an effort to improve the livelihood and physical, as well as mental, health of the addict by treating alcoholism as a choice, not a disease. We must shift this mentality and begin to classify alcoholism as a choice to improve treatment options and better the health of the individual. Mr. Koob, I urge you to consider the reasoning provided, for we are one in the same - both human beings who wish to alter this vicious cycle of alcoholism within society - and the only way to do so is to challenge the disease concept of alcoholism and the perception of involuntary drunkenness; to discuss this false thinking that has led to poor treatment of alcohol dependence; and to denounce the largely unsupported theory of alcoholism as a disease by terminating treatments geared towards this concept. Alcohol, the ambiguous genie in the bottle, has been publically affirmed to be responsible in the creation of the disease concept of alcoholism; man must become liable for their dependency upon alcohol, as the disease theory is devoid of sound scientific evidence and replete with self-deception. The disease theory of alcoholism should be ostracized by both medical professionals and the United States Court System, ultimately leading this society that has been plagued by alcohol dependency to discover the voluntary nature of their addiction
