Animals have done nothing to deserve the abuse many currently get in the world. The abuse received is punishment for nothing they have ever done. Animal cruelty is one of the most heinous crimes committed, and yet a majority of the abusers will not be punished. Animal cruelty spans into many branches. These include: dog fighting, puppy mills, animal hoarding, farm animal welfare, horse slaughter, and greyhound racing (“Animal Cruelty”). Another controversial topic is animal testing. Many organizations are pushing for tougher laws and regulations. Some of these organizations are “Animal Defense League”, “PETA”, and “ASPCA”, to just name a few. “Dog fighting is a type of blood sport in which dogs are forced to fight one another for the entertainment and/or profit of spectators” (“The Criminal, Underground World of Dog Fighting”). Each year, thousands of healthy young Greyhound dogs are killed because they lacked winning potential (“Greyhound Racing”). This “sport” has declined in recent years, but they're still more than 20 operating tracks in the United States. Racing routinely causes terrible injuries for these dogs. The injuries can span from broken legs, cardiac arrest, , spinal cord paralysis and broken necks (“Greyhound Racing”). These dogs also experience abuse off the track as well. They are locked in cages for more than 20 hours a day or kept outdoors in dirt pens. Conditions like these cause fleas, ticks, and internal parasites. Greyhounds life spans are usually 13 or more, but usually only 18 months to five years old when retired from racing (“FAQs”).
