All animals living on Animal Farm, strive to improve the farm for better living conditions and to create a happy, prosperous and peaceful lifestyle after rebelling against Mr Jones, yet there is a thin line between Intelligence of each animal and power as seen in George Orwell’s novel, Animal Farm. This book reflects the leadership and power Stalin had in the Russian Revolution and the communist society that rebelled against his poor dictating and is bought to life into a dystopian, metaphorical book. Although every animal had supposable ‘equal’ rations and rights, the hens were out of all animals treated the worst. With some intelligence, the hens posed a threat to Napoleon’s leadership and had the ability to grasp the aspect of equality and a true leader. This made them capable to overthrow Napoleon and corrupt his plans and theory of a communist dictatorship. In order to effectively control them Napoleon took charge and demanded 400 eggs a week to trade for more rations for the pigs, taking the one thing they loved most off them, their children. Evidence shows this as Squealer announced” The hens, who had just come in to lay again, must surrender their eggs. Napoleon had accepted, through Whymper, a contract for four hundred eggs a week (.” Many hens provoked and refused to give up and lay such large numbers, the expected quantity was not being met. He ruthlessly took their main necessity for survival which was food. To deprive hens from this essential need, Napoleon was to “divorce” them from the farms society so no other animals could interfere or offer food, allowing the hens to suffer the full brutality of starvation. This use of fear within power, controlled the hens to ensure their intelligence could not interfere with the leadership and the taking over of the farm.
