Anosognosia in mental illness is when someone is unaware of their mental condition, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness an estimate of 50% of people with schizophrenia, and 40% of people with bipolar disorder are affected by anosognosia. It can also accompany illnesses such as major depression with psychotic features. 56% of American adults with a mental illness do not receive treatment and over 1.7 million youth with major depressive episodes did not receive treatment. How are people who are unaware of their mental condition supposed to get help? The term mental illness ranges from a variety of disorders that can affect your mood, thinking, and behavior. Although some people believe the guns are the issue and that we need more gun control, I believe we need more psychological help because mental health is worsening and access to care is getting more difficult, we should be rethinking the Baker Act, defining mental health and obtaining weapons.
Studies show that mental health is worsening and the access to care is getting more and more limited. “For the past 20 years, studies have consistently estimated that almost half of all individuals with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder are receiving no treatment for their mental illness at any given time. When I say we need more psychological help I do not mean more mental institutions, I mean making help easier to access. When anyone wants to purchase a firearm there should be a psychological test, along with more serious background check. Anyone who is at risk of hurting themselves and the people around them should not have a
