For decades the world’s population have been led to believe bottled water is the safest way to drink water. The availability of bottled water helps provide consumers with easy access to water anywhere. The water bottle industry spends over ten billion dollars a year to produce what people presume to be safer water. The companies lead the everyday consumer to believe the water is purified and free of dirty, dangerous toxins. Sadly, the benefits of bottled water are not all regulated in the same manner. Water bottle companies should be registered with the International Bottled Water Association but many are not. Sadly, bottled water’s presumed safety is not all true. The water bottle industry claims the water produced is purified and healthy for the consumer. The water produced from the household tap is tested more frequently than bottled water and under federal law if local tap water is harmful companies are forced to notify the public (“Tap Water vs. Bottled Water”). As a matter of fact, tap water must meet higher purification standards than bottled water. The testing of tap water is an important process to keep communities and consumers safe from intaking harmful substances. Not only is bottled water not as thoroughly tested as tap water but can include harmful chemicals which interfere with a person’s hormones. Studious have concluded polycarbonate bottles can leach a chemical known as bisphenol A, which turns on estrogen receptors in a person’s body (Raloff). The chemical is leaked into the water by the heating of the plastic. If a water bottle is left outside or in other warm places for too long the chemical can leak inside the water.
