An estimated 41,070 people, both men and women, will die from breast cancer this year (ASCO). Breast Cancer is a disease that affects both men and women all over the world, and is an ongoing problem in our society, with no exact cure. The disease consists of a cancerous tumor starting in the breast tissue, and eventually growing into the rest of the body if not treated right away. People need to take early measures to prevent the disease at a young age. Women are advised to be treated when they are seen at most risk, the U.S. Department of Health and Human services states that the average woman starts getting mammograms every other year between the ages of 50 and 74 (Zarya, Valentina). This solution will save many lives in the long run, and should be advised by all doctors. Dr. D. David Dershaw, who founded the Breast Imaging Service at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, stated, “Everybody agrees that mammography works to save lives starting at age 40” (Dershaw, David). Dr. D. David Dershaw and many other doctors and organizations like American Cancer Society, believe that the earlier you start breast screenings, the better chance you are giving yourself. The United States Preventive Services Task Force "an independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention” (U.S. preventive), believe that when women are checked every year once they hit 40, they receive an affirmative answer, that yes indeed you have early signs of oncoming breast cancer, or no you are not showing signs now, and may never show signs of breast cancer. Receiving confirmation from these mammograms and knowing that you are preventing the cancer, or getting to it right away, benefits women tremendously. Not only does it give them control over their body, but it also leads them into their next path and preventative steps they may take whether they will start to seek treatments or if they will just continue to get annual screenings; at least now they have the choice to choose their next
