Every year in the United States, approximately 3.9 million dogs are euthanized in animal shelters, while only around thirty-five percent get adopted into loving families. Many individuals, like you, opt to purchase dogs from breeders because they want a certain type; however, many canines with unique characteristics are found just by adopting. I understand that this specific breed is your favorite, but sadly, many pure breed dogs have much more extensive health problems compared to mutts (mixed breed dogs). In a recent study by renowned veterinarians, mutts are tested to have stronger genetic compositions compared to pure breeds. Many pure dogs suffer from genetic issues caused by inbreeding which includes birth defects. By having different genetic compositions, mutts are considered the healthiest and strongest dog breed out of all the others. On the other hand, animal shelters are stocked with mixed breeds that are in need of a good home. In fact, more than seventy percent of our nation’s animal shelter populations are mutts. However, much of those dogs are not adopted, because of the fact that people are ignorant to acknowledge the truth that even though mutts are not perfect, they have good personalities that shine through.
