Finding yourself and looking into your future is the ideal outlook for college campus life. As parents see their freshman leaving, they worry about violence and if it will be surrounding their child. Some may argue that crime on campuses is more recurring than the crime on the outside. Hate crimes, rape, and burglary are a few of the top major crimes committed while on campus. In the technology world, Cyberstalking and the illegal sharing of videos and music are other types of crimes being committed. None of this information is new though, but it needs to be addressed in a better manner. Schools continue to keep these crimes secret and are unlikely to be the topic of conversation. The law states that all schools have to report any violence or crime and must be on their website or available for request. As well as setting up a timely warning when there is known danger on school or campus grounds. Any crime involving minors or college students are major attention grabbers. In January 2015, Brock Turner raped an unconscious woman behind a dumpster. This made breaking headline news due to the fact that he was a champion swimmer at Stanford. Craig Moran, an officer at UIC, compares the high crime rate to growth in bars near the school. He stated, “With the increase of bars and students, there is an increase of crime.” Many people would not agree with this statement, due to the fact that alcohol is not a tolerable reason for crime. Brock Turner was not drinking the night he chose to sexually assault a woman at a fraternity party. This incident sparked outrage and fear. Los Angeles Times explains to us that Governor Jerry Brown was so fired up about the short sentencing of Brock Turner that he passed two laws; treating sex crimes as rape at sentencing and those crimes punishment must result with time in state prison.
