Concussions are caused by the brain hitting the skull due to the acceleration or deceleration of the head. (Tong pp.18). This happens when the brain follows one of Newton’s Laws. Objects in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force; the unbalanced force in this case is your skull stopping your brain. Many people who have experienced concussions did not know they even had one. Sometimes, if you grow old and have experienced many concussions, one can suffer from many different severe problems that effects not only one’s personality, but physical ability also. Many people play football for the first time in high school and are clueless on how to tackle, and they do not even know what a concussion is. I personally have never experienced a concussion in high school because one thing I focused on was keeping my head safe during my career of playing football. Coaches are to show you how to tackle and prevent yourself from concussions, but for the most part, they run over it very quickly to avoid cutting actual practice short. They are legally obligated to go over the ways to tackle, but very few spend the appropriate amount of time going over it. This is where the system is corrupt and people from the front office of high schools should make sure that coaches spend the correct amount of time on showing players the correct way to go about things. Also, the school’s administration should have to teach kids the effects and causes of concussion to give them a sense of knowledge before they step foot on the field for sports. With more than 300,000 people each in high school having a concussion from sports, awareness should not be frowned upon. (Cournoyer pp. 654).
