Equality is ensuring that everyone receives the same treatment no matter their race, gender, religious beliefs or if they are disabled. Millions of disabled people are being treated equally all over the world, but can the same be said in the world of sports? Disabled athletes do not get the recognition they deserve. They do not receive the same kind of media attention as the non disabled athletes. Disabled athletes have to work ten times harder than the normal athletes to receive recognition yet they are still not awarded as much attention as non disabled athletes are. Disabled athletes have very little limited options when it comes to sports as compared to the able-bodied athletes. Why is it that so little access is being provided for the disabled athletes after all the advances in sport around the world?

Every athlete should have the right to play with one another, no discrimination nor separation. There are less disabled kids participating in sports because they do not feel welcomed by other kids. These kids are not enjoying the right recognized by Charter of the human right. Disabled athletes feel discriminated by the able-bodied athletes because in society we have this idea of what a disabled athlete can and cannot do. As David Legg, president of the Canadian Paralympics Committee quotes “I see the power of sport every day in my volunteer capacity with the Canadian Paralympic Committee. Champions such as Chantal Petitclerc emulate the drive and determination of high-performance athletes who surpass all barriers society expects to hold them back, while also serving as powerful role models for children both with and without a disability across the country. These athletes prove how sport empowers those with a physical disability to reach their full potential”
