According to the National Safety Council, 95% of teens agree with the statement that driving while distracted is dangerous, but still, 35% admit to having texted and driven within the past month. Distracted driving is an unnecessary and dangerous habit that can put the lives of drivers, passengers, and everyone else on the street on the line. Overall, distracted driving is an epidemic that can be curbed by explaining why distracted driving is an issue, encouraging teens to drive attentively, and providing other sources of entertainment that are not visual. The first way to help curb distracted driving is by reaffirming the reason for which distracted driving is an issue. To do this, it is crucial to understand why some teenagers choose to drive distracted in the first place. Teens continue to do it because they believe that they are capable of multitasking efficiently. Truthfully, teens accept the need for risk-taking as part of ordinary development. This can be done by shifting the blame that is often put on distracted drivers. Teenagers like to prove to others and to themselves that they are able to do tasks effortlessly, regardless of the strain that is actually put on the brain. Instead of making it so that young people are taught that they cannot actively use technology and operate a motor vehicle simultaneously, young people should be taught about what can happen in instances beyond their control. These, of course, include unforeseeable hazards and shifts in the operation of the vehicle. This will result in young people being able to sympathize more with not driving distracted, as they will not feel the subconscious pressure to prove to themselves they are worthy of multitasking, but rather think more critically about
