Distracted driving poses a grave threat to road safety, leading to numerous fatalities and injuries each year. According to the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2021, there were 3,522 fatalities and an estimated 362,415 injuries resulting from motor vehicle accidents involving distracted drivers. Every day, drivers engage in dangerous behaviors to quickly answer a text or check a notification. There is a growing online culture that often demands hours of attention and participation to stay relevant. The addictive algorithms and enticing modes of participation contribute to a constant craving for connection. This addiction is often exacerbated by the fear of missing out (FOMO) and pushes citizens to increase their screen times with the hope of feeling more connected, validated, and seen by their community. Additionally, many individuals are driven by productivity and confidence in multitasking. By contributing to work projects or answering a family member’s texts, a driver can continue to get tasks done while driving a car; however; these actions promote dangerous behaviors that result in fatal outcomes. Small cameras could focus on the eyes of the driver and ensure that sight is either locked on the road, checking the mirrors, or looking in the blind spot. Any deviance from these motions would result in an auditory beep and warning to bring one’s attention back to the road.
Implementing these personal and manufactured strategies would lead to increased awareness and prevention of distracted driving. It is pertinent to educate and share the dangers of distracted driving through large-scale campaigns, social media posts, and word of mouth to reinforce the influence and consequences it has on the lives of all people. Furthermore, legislative efforts that impose stricter penalties and enhance enforcement for distracted driving can reinforce the message and deter potential offenders.
