States have the opportunity to lead the way in saving lives by making it illegal to use a cell phone while driving. This would help to reduce the number of accidents caused by distracted driving. Distracted driving has become a deadly problem, according to the National Highway Safety Administration, over 3,000 deaths were caused by distracted driving in 2021. This is pretty alarming and needs to be addressed in order to make our roads safer. Although some people think states should not make it illegal to use hand held cell phones while driving, others understand that states should make it illegal to use hand held phones while driving because it would lead to reduced risk of injury and death, and it would reduce property damage.

Many drivers continue to use their phones while driving despite it being illegal, and it shows the difficulty law enforcement has with monitoring drivers. For example in 2017, the California Office of Traffic Safety reported that the rate of drivers using their phones while driving had not decreased since the state implemented a law banning it. This example shows that it is difficult to enforce infractions on drivers using their phone as the rate of drivers using their phone while driving has not decreased even with the law implemented. It shows that even with the law, it is hard for police to properly monitor and enforce the behavior of drivers. While it is true that police have a difficult time enforcing infractions on people using their phones while driving it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be illegal. A law is still a law at the end of a day and sends a message to drivers, that using your phone while driving is not acceptable. Even if it is ignored by people, the law can still be enforced and can reduce the number of drivers using their phone while driving. Even if it can’t be enforced properly that doesn’t mean a person won’t be held accountable if caught using their phone while driving. This information is important because even if it is difficult to enforce infractions on drivers using their phone while driving, it should be made illegal in order to state that using them while driving isn’t
