Olivia Putnam Mr. Allen March, 13, 2017 Period B Raising The Age To Drive: Teenage Deaths Due To Road Accidents Teenagers ranging from the age sixteen to nineteen die daily due to road related accidents. Whether it is because of drinking, drugs, or bad judgment, multiple accidents harm and happen daily. There are many solutions to this problem. One is that the age to drive can be raised. With the teenage brain still developing it would be safer to wait until adulthood to be able to drive. There are many other ways a teenager can be transported around. However, the frontal lobe is not fully developed from birth; throughout life, the frontal lobe is continuously developing. The frontal lobe not being fully developed explains why children act and do strange things without thinking and why teenagers are influenced to make bad decisions. The frontal lobe can be affected by ADHD and other disorders. Disorders similar to the ones presented affect the way it functions, leading to bad judgment and immature actions. Worse cases lead to law-breaking and possibly murder. The frontal lobe is also influenced by peers and can even be rewired depending on the feedback received. The need for acceptance among others is because of the frontal lobe. The fear of being an outcast is what leads teenagers to make risky choices, focusing on the riskier, unsafe short term benefits instead of the long term benefits in safer actions. The influence others have on the human brain is abused by advertisements and movies. Advertisements continuously telling teens the benefits of drinking and the movies that contain it feed the curiosity in a teenager’s head. In fact, a study
