In this land where fast food chains dominate, where obesity, as well as the heart attack rate, keeps on increasing, it’s difficult to believe anyone goes hungry. Yet somewhere in the dark, growling sounds from empty stomachs are taking over the lives of the unfortunate. As the world’s number one country, foreigners think Americans would never face starvation. Little do they know about the fact that hunger threatens the life of one in every seven Americans daily, from infants to seniors (“Feeding America”). Luckily, the solution for starvation is not as hard as curing cancer or finding a diamond in the ocean. Fortunately, John van Hengel, through generosity and philanthropy, initiated a solution by starting up a nonprofit organization, which has changed the nation’s hungry since its founding in the 1960s. [a] nationwide network of 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs… [It] secures donations from national food and grocery manufacturers, retailers, shippers, packers and growers and from government agencies and other organizations. Feeding America then moves donated food and grocery product to member food banks [then] distribute food and grocery items through food pantries and meal programs that serve [people] at risk of hunger” (“Food Bank Network”). With many different programs and food banks, it has the ability to distribute food to local places; as a result, people who suffer from hunger can come in and ask for food right away. Thus, hunger becomes a smaller issue for the unfortunate, and they feel more secure about themselves and start to think about their futures. The starvation rate has decreased and, the now fortunate, increased the nation’s economy. For these reasons, Feeding America has positively changed society
