The next time you get that impulse, you might want to check the legality of feeding the homeless where you live. Sadly, feeding the homeless has been banned in several major American cities. Cities that have yet to ban it outright have put so many ridiculous regulations on feeding the homeless (attaining expensive permits, taking food preparation courses, etc.) that feeding the homeless has become unfortunately “out of reach” for most average people. For example, Houston, Texas claims they are doing these things because they are concerned about the “health risks” of the food being distributed by ordinary “do-gooders”. Homeless shelters all over the nation are being forced to turn people away each night because they have no more room. There are many homeless people that are lucky just to make it through a single night alive during the harsh winters in many parts of America. Sometimes something as simple as a well-timed sandwich or a cup of warm soup can make a world of difference for a homeless person. It seems almost discriminatory that many local law enforcement agencies throughout the country have somehow determined that feeding another human being is such a great threat to public safety that they are assigning extra officers to areas with high homeless populations to combat it. In America today, you need a “permit” to do almost anything. Homelessness is a very huge problem that America has come to face. Millions of people, including children, families, babies, veterans, and the elderly live day after day without food, water or a roof over their heads.
