You are debating between two sports, deciding the probability of actually making the team, as you are about to enter your first year of high school. The decision was almost only based off how well you are prepared, and how many friends you know on the team, as you do not particularly like either of the sports. You are pressured, though, to pick one sport so you can put it on your application. You decide on field hockey because you know one person and are friendly with others. You end up making the team but then that one friend that you know well says that she does not want to play anymore. So, for the first practice of the season, you don't really know anyone. You are still determined to make the team, as you run 2 miles every day and practice field hockey in the grass or driveway, and sometimes you would go to the high school turf. The tryouts were much harder as JV and Varsity tryouts were together. For what seemed to be a week you went to your high school everyday to either run 3 miles, do drills, run the track or be tested on your ability to hit a ball. As you expected, you made the JV team with your other friends you made last year. You saw that you weren't alone on the pressures of doing the sport as someone had also told you how they are only doing it for college and social reasons. After every school day you got dressed in the locker room and went out. You dreaded the days where you had to practice against Varsity because you were defender, and your team couldn't get the ball pass for the halfline for more than a minute. You weren't the worst player but you were definitely not the best. Although nobody wanted to admit it there were obvious cliques on your team and nobody was that willing to branch out and make new friend groups out of their “social circle”. Even the upperclassmen only branched out to lower classmen if they were on the varsity team despite the amount of times you all practiced together.
